Not far West of Las Vegas are the majestic
Spring Mountains. In the middle of this beautiful range is Red
Rock Canyon, one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the
country. This canyon is an internationally known destination
for hikers and mountain climbers. Located only 15 miles from the
Strip, you can reach this site in twenty or thirty minutes. (Take
highway 159 west from downtown Vegas) Take your time while driving
and note the beautiful scenery that be seen on the way.
Your destination will be the Bureau
of Land Management Visitor Center. This facility has lots of displays
on local geology, flora and wildlife, but it does not have any
food or gas, so be prepared. At this point, most people either
walk the short nature trail or drive the 13 mile loop that runs
through the canyon. Open from 7 am to dusk, there is a small per
vehicle fee for the loop, but its worth it. You're encouraged
to pull over and look around at the picnic areas, over-looks and
trails that are located of the road. You'll see some beautiful
canyons and rock formations and will get the chance to see some
natural beauty near an unnatural city.
